Since we were in
grade school, we usually elect class officers, specifically the president down
to the muse and escort. I am sure you have your class officers now. Who are the
class officers here? Can you stand up? These officers are your leaders. To be a
good leader, one must know the word “leadership”. It is the ability to lead
others. What about leadership development? Is it needed?
Developing
leadership skills is important but this is not a one week training session. This
requires time. There are many reasons that we need to consider to know its
importance. First, leadership can develop our sense of responsibility and it will
build our confidence. Once we are assigned to be a leader we must be confident
in front of our members because as a good leader it is our responsibility to motivate
and inspire them to achieve our goals. Second, leaders must be able to manage
his/her members. The job of a leader is to get the most out of his or her
members. It will enhance our socializing skills and we can influence them to do
good things rather than those bad habits. Third, it will help us to identify our
self-awareness and our emotional intelligence. Fourth, it is important to us because
we are learning to build relationships between our team members to reach our
goals. It leads us to listen in both sides, because being a good leader do not
need to be biased.
Having
these importances will develop our leadership skills. As a student we should
know the characteristics of a good leader. We are the one who will decide what
kind of leader we want to be. Leading others is not a bad thing because we can
get some lessons from experiences of others. For me, everyone can lead a group
of people. All of us are leaders but some of them do not know how to handle
their members. Leadership bring us unique yet memorable experiences that we can
share to others for them to use it as a motivation to reach their goals. In
every seminars about leadership they always says that if you want to be a
leader you need to have a clear purpose in mind and good intention in the
heart. My previous mentor once said that, “Leadership always needs an action,
if you do not want to make an action then you are not a leader.” It only means
that all of us should have discipline in ourselves to take the responsibilities
and consequences of our action.
Lastly,
let us remember that “You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do.
Together we can do great things.” This is from Mother Theresa. It only means
that if all of us have the characteristics of a leader we can do better things
as long as we have unity and we use action. Always remember the difference
between a boss and a leader. A boss says “Go!” while leaders says “Let’s go!” So
open our eyes in reality and make ourselves a leader that will makes us successful.
